PARENT MEETING: March 16, 2013

Hello Parents:

This is a recap of the Parent Meeting if you missed or need to refer, this in NO WAY exempts you from attending the required meetings and/or sending a representative.

I. OLD BUSINESS

A. Retreat (deposits are passed due $75 (nonrefundable), please contact the office is your child is planning to attend and you need more time. ImageB. MAD Project is ongoing until May 16, 2013 final workshop day. The person with the most   jeans will be recognized at the Celebration Dinner and receive a prize and article write-up in the Michigan Chronicle.ImageC. Basketball Team: PUT GATORS: The season begins in June, practices begin in May and will be held on Thursday’s 6pm-8pm. The athletic fee is $85, if your child signed up you will receive a call from Ms. Theresa Johnson (Parent Coordinator for Basketball). She will give you further details about what is expected and the information concerning the season.

D. Overview of College Trip: Great experience and great reviews from the parents.

E. Celebration Dinner: Tickets are being distributed and dinner tickets are $25. All money is due at the May workshop. If you are in need of tickets please contact our office. Tickets will be available at April Workshop and maybe online, stay tuned.ImageF. Movies 4 A Cause:  April 5, 2013 @ 6:30pm will we be watching Tyler Perry’s “Temptation” viewer discretion advise. Contact us for Tickets are available contact our office to reserve tickets.

G. Charity Basketball Game postponed to a later date, players not available on April 20th. Therefore, we have decided to sell dinners to raise money for the Banquet. Our goal is $2000, we believe with the support of all parents this will be a success. Dinners will be $10 (4 Whole Wings or BBQ Ribs, Mac & Cheese, String Beans, Potato Salad, Dinner Roll and Dessert). Orders can be placed in advance, 10 or more orders will be delivered. Also, you can pick up at the The ROAD Church 15425 Schaefer Hwy. (Dinners will be sold between 10am-4pm).

H. Community Service: Our annual community service is April 20, 2013 @ 10am-2pm. Permission slips will be sent via email next week, please sign and fax to 313-397-9302. We will be working with Project 313 in an outdoor project. Please make sure your child wears comfortable clothing and shoes, clothes they doing not mind getting dirty.

II. New Business

A. 2013-2014 Enrollment is open $50 New Registrants & $30 (Returning)  Two or more in a family $5 discount per enrollment.

B. Community Service Hours: If any our youth need or would like community service hours, Project-U-Turn is looking for a volunteer. He/She must be able to type at least 30 words per minute to do some data entry work.

C. Auditions: We are holding auditions to perform at the Celebration Dinner. If you son or daughter would like to sing, poetry, dance at our annual dinner, please prepare a 3 minute presentation, auditions will be held after the Parent Meeting at the May workshop. If you have performed in the past, you will not be eligible for the 2012-2013 year.

D. Contributions: Project-U-Turn can not make donations to any student or individual at this time, it would not be fair to other youth who have fundraisers, college trips, etc…In the future, we hope to have a fund to distribute scholarships during our annual dinner.

 

 

 

 

 

PARENT MEETING: January 26, 2013

HELLO PARENTS:

This is a recap of the Parent Meeting if you missed it or need to refer:

I. Christmas Party (just gave overview of the party)

II. Retreat (we talked about the location change of the retreat, decrease in cost dependent upon participation, money can be paid NOW if you like, permission slips and flyer will be sent electronically for those that didn’t attend meeting. NONREFUNDABLE $75 deposit is due March 1, 2013. We will be traveling via Charter Bus (if you know someone with a bus that would sponsor us that would be AWESOME). The cost of the retreat does include hotel, transportation, and admission to parks.

III. Outings (we discussed the lack of participation from kids in the program) The outings are designed to allow the kids to get to know one another and bond. Please bring your child to the outings, and refer to the schedule of the next outing. Although we said it was optional, this is for them to develop social skills.

IV. Communication (we are finding our communication is a major issue, some parents say they didn’t get the information via email, we have asked that you make sure we have your correct information to communicate). We are asking that you give us a number we can text you, as a alternate method of communication.

NEW BUSINESS

VI. M.A.D. Project (please see the flyer on this blog, you will also get electronically for circulating purpose) The young person that collects the most jeans will get a prize. Jeans can be all sizes, however preferably for teens.

VII.Charity Basketball Game

A. Date: April 20, 2013 @ 4pm (location is being set) (this is a workshop day and we are scheduled to do community service on that day).

B. Parents are asked to donate items for the concession stands

C. More information is forthcoming

VIII. Celebration Dinner (Tickets will be $35 per person) Location TBD

IX. Basketball Team (Mr. Day discussed 2 teams that will form the basketball team, Team A will be the current boys team that has played in the past. The 2nd team will be a co-ed team with girls and new boys wanting to play. Interested in playing need to sign-up, sign up sheet was pasted out at the meeting. If your child is interested, please submit name to Crystal (Parent Liason). There will be a athletic fee in order for the child to play, uniforms are already available). Direct all questions to Mr. Day, please.

X. Mid-Year Evaluation Forms (During the meeting some parents gave verbal expressions about the program and what their child has been saying, GREAT REVIEWS!!). Annually, 2 evaluations are given to complete in January & May, the 1/2 way point and the end. Please complete and fax back to us ASAP.

*****Information that we neglected to discuss was our MOVIES 4 A CAUSE. Our organization has been hosting movie parties whenever Tyler Perry comes out with a new film. It is a fundraiser to help with the programs. We have schedule our next one on APRIL 5 (Friday) to view Tyler Perry’s “TEMPTATION”. Tickets are $17 includes MOVIE, Small Popcorn & Small Drink, and Tyler Perry Promotional Items. You will receive a flyer next week with more information.

COLLEGE TRIP 2013 GRADES 10th-12th

Hello Parents & Students

Calvin College Trip is on Friday, March 8-9, 2013! Our hopes is that you will come with an attitude to gain information about your future. College is a necessity not an option; thus learning from the experience and asking a lot of questions.

We will be following the schedule that Calvin has planned for us, remember this is not the college anyone has to attend. And I hope your purpose for coming is to GAIN INFORMATION ONLY!!!  Calvin College is gracious enough to allow Project-U-Turn group to be their special guest!

Please remember we must leave promptly at 6:00am (Lawrence Tech) to arrive on time at 8:00am. Please pack lightly with overnight items, sleeping bag and pillow. We will be returning on Saturday afternoon at 12pm (Lawrence Tech).

Boys will be housed in the BOYS Dormitory with a Calvin Student Ambassadors and the girls will be housed in the GIRLS Dormitory with Calvin Student Ambassadors.Image

You are welcome to bring light snacks for the overnight stay. The dorm will have activities planned or possibly attend whatever events are held on campus during this time.

Parents are asked to allow the youth to have a COLLEGE EXPERIENCE without the accessive phone calls, text messaging, etc…

Meals will be provided for Friday (Lunch & Dinner) & Saturday (Breakfast). Everyone will receive a meal card and is responsible for keeping up with it.

It is our expectation that your child will be on their best behavior representing not only the Parent, but the program and themselves. If any behavioral problems occur you must pick up your child in GRAND RAPIDS!!

Although we know we have GREAT KIDS! some things must be said!

2012 Project-U-Turn Retrea Updates

Hello Parents:

As mentioned in our last parent meeting here are the instructions for the retreat

Retreat Date: June 15-17, 2012

Friday

  • Departure Time: 8:30am (from Lawrence Tech)
  • Breakfast @ McDonalds (our expense: budget $3.18)
  • Arrival Time: 11:30am (check in)
  • Waterpark: 12:30pm-5:30pm (lunch on your own within the waterpark)
  • Dinner: 6:30pm  (Dinner @ Ryans All You Can Eat Buffet your expense estimated cost: $14.00: meal, drink, and taxes)
  • Return 2 Kalahari: 8pm (Waterpark til close)

Saturday: All you drink wristbands & 1 meal voucher)

  • Breakfast: 9:00am
  • Leave for Cedar Point: 11:00am
  • Lunch on your own at the Park ($ 10 Meal Voucher included)
  • Return from Cedar Point: 6pm
  • Kalahari Waterpark & Dinner (your expense)- 7pm-Close

(kids normally do pizza)

Sunday:

Breakfast  2 Go Bag & Departure : 7am

Pick-up @ The R.O.A.D. Church: 9:30am  (15425 Schaefer Hwy, Detroit, MI.) or after church at 12:30am (optional)
